The Randoms We Get Paired With (And Why We Secretly Love Them)

Golf is the only sport where you show up planning to hang out with your buddies… and end up spending 4 hours with complete strangers.

Sometimes it’s awkward.
Sometimes it’s hilarious.
Sometimes it’s mildly concerning.

But every once in a while, you meet absolute legends.

Here are the randoms we all know from the first tee.

1. The Golf Ball Archaeologist

You know the one.

Before the round even starts, he’s already in the bushes.

Not because he shanked one.
Because he’s prospecting.

Every hole becomes a full-blown excavation:

Leaves being kicked
Branches being parted
Statements like “Hold on, I think I see a Pro V1.”

By hole 6, he’s found:

3 Top Flites
2 range balls
A noodle from 2007
One ball that may actually be a fossil

And somehow… he still refuses to use them.

We don’t know if he’s playing golf or stocking a pro shop, but we respect the hustle.

2. The Jokester Who Becomes Your New Golf Buddy

This guy is the best surprise pairing in golf.

You meet on the first tee with the standard awkward handshake and weather small talk.

By hole 3:
You’re laughing.

By hole 7:
You’re talking life, work, kids, travel.

By hole 12:
You’re saying, “We gotta play again sometime.”

By hole 18:
You’re exchanging numbers like you just survived a war together.

Golf friendships are weird and wonderful.
Four hours of shared struggle build bonds faster than years of small talk.

You came to play golf.
You left with a new group chat.

3. The Couple (Featuring the Sleep-Deprived Assassin)

You see the tee time pairing and think:

“Oh, this will be a nice, relaxed round.”

Then it happens.

Your partner shows up one minute before the tee time:

Sunglasses hiding regret
Shirt slightly untucked
Hair telling stories
Whispering: “Rough night.”

He grabs a coffee or ties it on with another beer at 8-9 in the morning, takes one practice swing, steps up…

…and absolutely pipes it 260 down the middle.

No warm-up.
No stretching.
No hydration.
Just vibes.

Meanwhile, you’ve stretched, rolled out, hit the range, watched YouTube swing tips… and just snap-hooked one into another zip code.

Golf is a humbling sport.

Why We Love the Randoms

Here’s the truth:
Golf would be boring if we only played with the same people every time.

The course is full of characters:

The ball hunters
The storytellers
The accidental scratch golfers
The people who turn into friends

Every round becomes a story.

And honestly?
That’s what makes golf the greatest game on earth.
